Kings Heath goes bananas for bunting

more Kings Heath local news

Town centre traders are turning to local children to add an extra splash of colour to their shop windows this summer.

In what is described as 'nostalgic fun', they want to kids to created strings of hand-made bunting for the displays.

The Kings Heath BID (Business Improvement District) will hold various themed competitions, events and free family fun throughout the summer months using the theme 'Almighty Blighty' to coincide with national events such as the Queen’s Birthday and Wimbledon.

It all starts this half term and to make it easier free paper and colouring materials will be available at venues around the town centre.

“Not only is it a great bit of free fun for the kids, we also hope it will encourage people to come down and see the High Street when it is decorated,” says town centre manager Katy Stone.

“As you can imagine, we’re going to need quite a bit of bunting to line the whole of Kings Heath, so get involved over the half term and decorate as many bunting pieces as you can.”

Finished bunting will be displayed in many shop and restaurant windows along Kings Heath High Street and beyond, creating a quaint, picturesque affect throughout the town, according to the organisers.

Families are invited to get involved and join in the fun over the half term holidays by visiting bunting making stations to create their own designs for display. The bunting decorating sessions are completely free, with all materials provided, and children are encouraged to make as many pieces as they wish. Stations can be found from Tuesday 31 May at Loco Lounge, Esme’s Eats, Togademus, Costa, Kings Heath Library, the Village Square Café, and Kitchen Garden Café.

Children can also create their own bunting at home, by simply diagonally cutting plain A4 paper in half to create two bunting triangles.

Finished designs must be returned to drop-off points at I Had One Of Those, Cooshoo, Armadillo, All Saints Welcome Desk, or Kings Heath Library, or at one of the bunting making stations, by Tuesday 7 June.

Almighty Blighty Bunting will be on display in Kings Heath business windows from Saturday 11 June onwards.
